This full-day, in-person course is designed for primary school teachers and subject leaders who want to develop high-quality design and technology (D&T) curriculum and lessons. Whether you’re new to D&T or seeking to enhance your current curriculum, this hands-on session will provide you with the tools and confidence to deliver engaging, impactful lessons.

The session will additionally highlight best practices, using acclaimed D&T planning resource 'Projects on a Page'.  There are 23 planners that cover Food and Nutrition, Textiles, Structures, Mechanisms, Electronics and Programming and Control. It is a flexible scheme of work for D&T that helps schools to deliver a breadth of excellent primary design and technology.

Who Should Attend?

  • Primary teachers looking to build confidence in teaching D&T.
  • Curriculum leaders seeking to develop a progressive and engaging D&T framework.
  • Educators interested in using POAP to align lessons with the D&T National Curriculum.

Course objectives:

  • Understand how Projects on a Page can be used to tailor D&T at your primary school and to best meet the needs of your pupils.
  • Understand how to contextualise learning and develop rich opportunities for pupils, avoiding a ‘making by numbers’ approach of D&T teaching.
  • Develop the skills to plan a D&T curriculum using POAP, including adding context and designing cohesive sequences of lessons.
  • Explore ways to make lessons more engaging by sharing ideas and ensuring coverage of the 6 D&T Principles.
  • Break down the contents of one or more POAP units, then engage in hands-on examples and develop practical skills.

By participating in this course, you will learn how to:

  • Use Projects on a Page as a planning tool.
  • Use Projects on a Page to develop a sequence of lessons.
  • Learn how POAP can address the key design skills of design, make, and evaluate.
  • Ensure content coverage and progression through the key stages.
  • Contextualise learning.
  • Ensure the D&T ‘key content’ is being delivered.
  • Plan engaging lessons with a variety of learning opportunities.
  • Create practical outcomes using Projects on a Page templates.
  • Create a sequence of lessons following the templates.

What to Bring:

  • We recommend bringing a laptop or portable device for the session
