Simon Tarrant

Simon delivers H&S training, bespoke CPD and consultancy to schools in Hampshire and the South of England alongside his role as a part-time teacher of Product Design (up to A-level) at Bedales School, Petersfield. He was previously Head of D&T at both Winchester College (10 years) and St John’s School, Leatherhead (3 years). He taught D&T for four years at RGS Guildford where he gained Qualified Teacher Status and has been a visiting tutor at Imperial College / Royal College of Art on their undergraduate and postgraduate (Masters) programmes in Design Engineering.  He was previously an Examiner of A-level D&T: Systems & Control (AQA).

Simon advises schools on their D&T curriculum having submitted candidates for the following exam boards and qualifications:

  • OCR, AQA and CIE
  • GCSE, iGCSE, A-level and Pre-U
  • Design Technology, D&T: Product Design and D&T: Design Engineering and 3D Design

He has delivered extra-curricular programmes in Greenpower, F1 in Schools, Young Engineers, Young Enterprise and STEM, and led numerous domestic and international trips including one to Italy. His professional design and manufacturing experience includes Supergalaxy Chess (a 3D-printed titanium chess set), Enstruct (a mass-produced educational resource), and the Streetrower (Fiat Design Prize runner up).

His training in H&S dates back to his role as a Sponsored Construction Project Management Trainee at Bovis Lend Lease (1997-2004) alongside studying Engineering (MEng) at the universities of Cambridge and Nottingham.

Simon is passionate about creativity in education and supports D&T departments looking to inspire the next generation of designers, architects and engineers. In relation to H&S his approach is to encourage and facilitate positive engagement of staff and pupils, finding the fun and enjoyment along the way. He is a Senior Registered D&T H&S Consultant able to deliver the full range of training on machinery and equipment, and with responsibility for updating many of the training materials used for D&TA H&S training courses. He has a range of experience relevant to the design of new D&T facilities including those at Emanuel School and Winchester College.  He is intimately familiar with BS 4163 (2021) and happy to advise schools in terms of compliance.
