This engaging and practical full-day course is designed to help you confidently introduce and develop 3D CAD skills in your department. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to expand your knowledge, this session will provide you with the tools and strategies to inspire your students and enhance their learning.
What You’ll Learn:
- Explore free, cloud-based CAD software that’s accessible on any device with an internet connection, making it perfect for Key Stage 3 and 4.
- Discover how to take students from simple sketches to creating accurate, multi-part assemblies with technical drawings and renders.
- Learn how to export parts for practical applications like laser cutting and 3D printing, adding real-world value to classroom projects.
- See how CAD aligns with the English D&T curriculum while gaining skills transferable to other courses and applications requiring CAD.
Course objectives:
- Understand the difference between 2D and 3D CAD.
- Appreciate the difference between direct modelling and parametric CAD.
- Learn about the different software available and make informed choices about which software is right for your needs.
- Gain hands on skills in two popular cloud-based CAD packages.
- Learn how 3D CAD can be integrated into your curriculum along with CAM and rapid prototyping.
- Work through a series of structured tutorials to gain confidence in the use of CAD.
By participating in this course, you will learn how to:
- Use Tinkercad to create objects and assemblies.
- Export in 2D and 3D formats for laser cutting and 3D printing.
- Use simulation to explore physical aspects and link to maths and science.
- Explore simple options for coding using the built in Micro: Bit simulations.
- Use Onshape to create parts and assemblies.
- Create technical drawings and exports parts for 3D printing.
- Ensure your use of CAD can meet or exceed the expectations of the national curriculum.
- Consider more advanced software options for FEA, generative design and photo realistic rendering.
What to Bring:
- You will require a laptop, mouse and your charger. Although the software's can be accessed via tablet device it is not suitable for this course.
