Ages 9-11

This upper Key Stage 2 programming and control resource made in collaboration with E.ON, encourages pupils to explore the context of keeping safe at night through user-centred design and practical problem solving. The project introduces pupils to contextual design approaches, allowing them to investigate real-world problems before developing and prototyping their own solutions.

Using Crumble controllers, or alternatively micro:bit, pupils explore programming and control through a focused practical task where they create and code a night light using light dependent resistors (LDRs), sparkles and simple block-based coding. Alongside this, pupils investigate users, carry out primary research, develop specifications, generate and refine design ideas, and evaluate their outcomes through user feedback.

The resource supports progression in programming, electronics and design thinking, while also developing creativity, communication, empathy and problem solving. Opportunities for cross-curricular learning are embedded throughout, including links to computing, science and sustainability. The unit is adaptable depending on available curriculum time, materials and pupil experience, with opportunities for CAD, modelling, textiles and product design approaches.
