Designed for Life - Reset Short Update, We have been offline for a short while whilst we evaluate, reconsider where the podcast is heading and reset. This is the first of what will be a regular series of brief updates between the main podcasts. In these, we aim to tell you what we are up to at the Design & Technology Association, highlight any primary areas of work you might not be aware of, discuss what's going on with the subject, and occasionally bring in guests to help inform the conversation. These...
SketchUp for Schools, This on-demand webinar explores how SketchUp for Schools can be used to support 3D design and modelling in Design and Technology. Led by members of the education team, the session provides an overview of how the platform has been developed specifically for classroom use, including how it integrates with Google and Microsoft education platforms so teachers and students can access the software using existing school accounts and devices. Examples of student work are shared throughout, showing how learners use 3D modelling to explore real design challenges, from scaled architectural models to

Exploring RAF technical careers in D&T, This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting how D&T teachers can bring engineering careers to life in their classrooms. While students enjoy hands-on practical work, their understanding of engineering roles can often remain narrow. Introducing them to the variety of technical careers within the RAF—from mechanical and electrical to digital systems—helps students see how the skills and knowledge developed in D&T are applied in real operational settings. Many students mistakenly view engineering as a single career path, rather than a diverse field requiring different skills, knowledge and...
Scalextric4Schools: A Day of Innovation and Racing at Silverstone, We had the opportunity to attend the Scalextric4Schools competition in June held at the iconic Silverstone Museum. Over 500 schools participate annually, many incorporating the competition into their curriculums. Students aged 11 to 18 have been designing, manufacturing, testing, and refining their slot cars with ten teams making it to the finals. The teams had the opportunity to race their cars on a landscaped Scalextric layout and presenting to a panel of judges on how they designed, manufactured, and tested their cars. The...
Turning plastic waste into purpose, At Neston High School, a student-led Makerspace is transforming how design and technology is taught, placing sustainability, engineering and real-world problem solving at the heart of learning. Led by Pat Link, the initiative shows how hands-on experiences can bring meaningful change to both curriculum and classroom practice. Over the past eight years, students have recycled more than 800,000 plastic bottle tops, turning waste into usable materials while developing practical and technical skills. What began as a small, tool-based workspace has grown into a fully equipped environment, complete with 3D...
Three-Day Intensive D&T Training for Non-Specialists, Published by: Stephanie Antoniades, Marketing & Digital Content Assistant Recently, I had the privilege of attending a remarkable course hosted by the Design & Technology Association, the "Three-day Intensive D&T Training for Non-Specialists." As a new team member, I was particularly curious to gain firsthand knowledge about the courses we run, and this one specifically aimed at non-specialists, seemed like the perfect opportunity to dive in. What I experienced over those three days was not just a learning journey, but an inspiring exploration of the world of design
