The Design & Technology Association is delighted to have won the tender to deliver curriculum content across Key Stages 1-4 as part of the Oak National Academy’s next stage of curriculum delivery. This next stage of work with Oak is noteworthy, as it is the first time that any government-funded body worldwide has attempted to create and host best-practice curriculum content across all subjects on a free-to-all user basis.

We are now seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced secondary teacher who will be available from 1st September 2024 to review, and quality assure model lessons for our Oak National Academy Secondary curriculum. Successful candidates will be appointed on a day-rate consultancy basis and need to be available to work on this project between 1st September 2024 and the end of August 2025.

All successful candidates must be available to work daily from 1st September through to Friday September 20th inclusive and will be required to attend residential Oak National Academy training to be held in Birmingham on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th of September.

You will be working as part of a team of lead educators to develop free, optional, high-quality full curriculum packages for secondary design and technology.  

Contract Term and Duration

The successful candidate(s) will be appointed on day rate consultancy contract with a start of the 1st of September 2024 and with availability required by negotiation throughout the production stage ending August 2025.

Remuneration Detail

This role will be remunerated at a level of £240 per working day. This role is remunerated on a day rate consultancy basis for the length of the contract.


The Subject reviewer will be an excellent professional with experience of creating high-quality lesson resources that demonstrate pedagogical best practice in subject and phase.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate(s) will have held a subject leadership role within their school and will have led others in the delivery of a high-quality design and technology curriculum.

The Subject Reviewer must have Qualified Teacher Status and three or more years of successful direct teaching experience in a school/schools across Key Stages Three and Four. They should be experienced advocates of secondary design and technology education and need to demonstrate experience of managing design and technology examination requirements including the NEA.

The post holder needs to be a team player, confident with the use of digital tools to record model lessons and create inclusive resources.

Whilst it is anticipated that much of this work will be produced working remotely, the post holder needs to be able to attend the Association’s office in Banbury when requested by the Project Manager or CEO.

The post holder will make themselves available for Oak National Academy and Design & Technology Association training and must be willing and able to attend meetings in London and elsewhere called for this purpose. (Standard travel expenses will be paid).

Please note that we have partnered with the British Nutrition Foundation to deliver all cooking and nutrition lessons at Key Stages 1-3 (there is currently no contract to deliver Oak material for food at KS4). Consequentially, this role does not cover cooking and nutrition lessons.

Personal Attributes

  • High levels of subject and pedagogical knowledge and experience gained within school(s) where they can demonstrate high levels of competence in design and technology education.
  • Experience in curriculum and lesson design, evaluation, and delivery is essential.
  • A team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Very capable of managing their own time and schedule to meet strict deadlines.
  • High levels of literacy and the ability to write extended pieces of written content with consistency.
  • Technologically competent and familiar with the tools required to deliver high-quality online lessons and resources.
  • Conscious of how to adopt an engaging online teaching persona and able to guide and coach others in doing the same.
  • Reliable, conscientious, and hard-working. Capable of delivering and receiving high-quality and empathetic feedback.


  • Due to the need to work remotely on aspects of this work, the post-holder is expected to have a suitable space to work in and within which to hold online meetings and record lessons without interruption. A reliable home internet connection is essential for this work.
  • The post-holder will be supplied with a laptop computer for the length of this contract.
  • Experience of Google Workspace, though not essential, would be highly beneficial.
  • Possession of a clean driving licence and access to a vehicle, whilst not wholly essential, would offer an advantage.

Start Date

Freelance with full time availability for training 1st –20th September 2024, and then agreed hours until 30th August 2025, estimated at 0.4 FTE but subject to negotiation at interview.
