Exploring 3D Design in the D&T Classroom with SketchUp for Schools

Published 30th January 2026

D&T teachers recently joined our webinar to explore how SketchUp for Schools can be used to support 3D design and modelling in the classroom.

Led by members of the SketchUp education team, the webinar provided an overview of how the platform has been developed specifically for classroom use. Teachers were shown how SketchUp for Schools integrates with Google and Microsoft education platforms, allowing both staff and students to access the software using existing school accounts and devices.

The session focused on how 3D modelling can help students move from early ideas and sketches to detailed digital models, supporting design thinking, spatial reasoning and project-based learning across primary and secondary education.

Examples of student work were shared during the session, illustrating how learners use 3D modelling to explore real design challenges, from scaled architectural models to projects that link directly to 3D printing and physical making. The webinar also highlighted the range of free curriculum resources available, including ready-to-use lessons designed to support different age groups, subject areas and levels of experience.

The session also introduced the UK SketchUp for Schools Ambassadors Programme, which offers a limited number of participating teachers access to ongoing training, peer support and opportunities to contribute feedback to future curriculum and product development. The programme aims to support teachers in developing confidence with 3D modelling and embedding its use more widely within schools.
