Primary core health & safety training for D&T teachers
Published 2nd December 2025
The Primary Core Health & Safety Training (PCHS) course is a one-day, hands-on programme designed to equip primary teachers with the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to deliver design and technology lessons safely and effectively.
Guided by a registered health and safety consultant, delegates explore key areas including risk assessments, COSHH assessments, lesson planning, and practical skills and techniques. The course provides practical, age-appropriate guidance on using a variety of tools, equipment and materials safely with KS1 and KS2 pupils.
By the end of the day, delegates will:
- Receive nationally recognised certification through the D&TA scheme.
- Develop new or enhance existing practical skills and techniques, producing a tangible working outcome.
- Gain confidence in managing tools, equipment and materials in the classroom, including effective organisation strategies.
- Understand health and safety requirements and know how to create and adapt risk and COSHH assessments to ensure safe delivery of D&T lessons.
- Have made a product using a range of techniques, tools and processes to demonstrate safe use.
- Take away a portfolio of information to use back in school to ensure safe working practices.
No prior experience is required, and all participants will leave accredited under the Primary H&S Training Standards from the D&T Association.
Schools can also host a course on-site. If your school can provide lunch and space for up to 10 attendees, one of your staff will receive a complimentary place. We provide the trainer, all the training equipment and manage the bookings and advertising to other schools in your area.
