Inspiring the next generation at the QEHS STEM Fair
Published 11th March 2026
More than 800 primary pupils from over 30 local schools recently experienced a vibrant celebration of STEM at the annual fair hosted by Queen Elizabeth’s High School in Gainsborough. Held across two days, the event is one of the largest free STEM experiences for young people in Lincolnshire, bringing together schools, industry and students to spark curiosity and creativity.
The fair was organised by staff and students at the school, supported by a range of industry partners including the Royal Navy, AMP Rose and Eminox. Together they delivered hands-on activities designed to give visiting pupils an insight into the real-world applications of STEM and engineering.

Hands-on learning that sparks curiosity
Across the event, pupils took part in practical challenges, demonstrations and interactive activities that brought STEM concepts to life. Experiences like these show how meaningful encounters with industry can help pupils connect classroom learning with real careers and future opportunities.
For teachers, events such as this highlight the value of hands-on learning and industry collaboration in inspiring young people. Activities that combine creativity, problem solving and practical experimentation mirror many of the core experiences found in design and technology classrooms.
The fair was also powered by student leadership. More than 70 sixth form students helped run activities and mentor visiting pupils, supported by Year 10 GMAT STEM students and members of the Year 7 STEM Club. Their involvement helped create a welcoming environment where younger pupils could explore, ask questions and build confidence.

Celebrating STEM in schools
Ryan Ball, Director of Education at the Design & Technology Association, attended the event.
“It was great to see an event on this scale, promoting and celebrating all things STEM. Led and organised by a fantastic head of D&T, the enthusiasm in every room was contagious, with lots of hands-on activities on a variety of topics and areas. The work that went into the day was evident. The feedback from children of the local primary schools in attendance was also extremely positive. You could tell by the smiles, cheers, awe and wonder on their faces.”
Events like the QEHS STEM Fair demonstrate how schools, teachers and industry can work together to inspire the next generation of designers, engineers and innovators. For teachers, they offer a powerful reminder of how practical experiences and real-world connections can bring learning to life in the classroom.
