Royal Ballet & Opera brings free design CPD to Swindon

Teachers in Swindon and the surrounding area are invited to a unique professional development opportunity as the Royal Ballet & Opera Schools team hosts a free design CPD session at STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway on Friday 6 March 2026.

Build confidence in teaching design

The full-day training, running from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm, is part of the award-winning Create & Design programme, a curriculum-led initiative supporting teachers across primary, secondary and SEND settings. It is designed to help teachers build confidence in teaching design and bring practical, creative approaches straight into the classroom.

Participants will explore techniques to develop students’ research, creative problem-solving, sketching, model-making and prototyping skills. The programme also introduces the Create & Design classroom resources for KS1–KS5/Post 16. Activities include practical warm-ups, engagement exercises, and guidance on taking students from initial creative briefs to final designs.

Who can attend

The CPD is suitable for class teachers, subject leads, teachers new to design, those looking to refresh their skills, as well as teachers in training, teaching assistants, technicians, and other learning professionals. No prior experience in ballet, opera, or stage design is required.

Past participants have praised the programme for its practical focus and inspirational content. One teacher commented: “The day was absolutely fabulous. Lots of ideas to take back into class. All pitched fantastically with lots of time to try out ideas and chat with colleagues.”

The free CPD will take place at STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway, Firefly Avenue, Swindon, SN1 2EY. Teachers interested in attending are encouraged to book now to secure their place.
