New series 'Through the Factory' brings British manufacturing to life for students
Published 3rd November 2025
A bold new series, 'Through the Factory', is set to change the way young people view British manufacturing.
Created by Tom Flude and the Engineers Insight team, the series aims to inspire the next generation of engineers by giving students an authentic look inside UK factories.
Tom said “Someone needs to change the perception of Manufacturing and make people feel proud to be an engineer. Through our partnership with The Design & Technology Association we hope to do just that. Through the Factory will become a free resource D&T teachers can use in classrooms to inspire students and explain real world applications and technologies.”
Inside the factory: meet the people behind real innovation
The first episode visits Salt Separation Services, a world leader in water treatment and desalination systems, based in Rochdale. Students and teachers can see how British manufacturing quietly keeps the world running, from apprentices learning engineering skills to complex systems supplying fresh water to offshore rigs and global communities. Expect honest conversations, intentional awkward moments, and a behind-the-scenes look at teamwork, technology, and tradition in action.
The series aims to reach millions of students, teachers, and parents across the UK. For design and technology classrooms, it provides a valuable resource to spark discussions about modern engineering, creativity, and problem-solving. The first episode is available now on YouTube, watch it below and share with your students.
Together we can inspire millions of people into amazing careers.
