Inspired by Industry: Salsus Design

The context supports mid to late Key Stage 3, covering technical knowledge such as CAD, CAM, rapid prototyping, modelling, electronics, manufacturing processes, and links to maths and science. It includes focused tasks, investigative activities and opportunities to learn how products move from prototype to commercial manufacture.

Students explore user-centred design, ergonomics, anthropometrics and inclusive design principles while developing concepts for accessible digital music controllers or interfaces. Outcomes may be conceptual or functional, using both physical modelling (foam, card, polymorph, 3D printing) and CAD.

This context invites pupils to design products that make digital music creation more accessible for users who may find existing tools difficult to use. Developed with Salsus Design, it guides students through a full design process – empathise, define, ideate, prototype, test and implement – using real industrial methods.
