Skills for Industry – Sketch Up & Surveying with UnPS

First published 2017
Ages 11-14

The Skills for Industry programme provides an opportunity to link secondary schools with a local industry partner to help Design and Technology teachers to develop and teach the industry-relevant knowledge and skills needed by the industry partner.

The PowerPoint and associated SketchUp and Word files are a record of the project that took place in 2017 but also provide materials to adapt for use in your school.

This project has a scheme over nine one-hour lessons. Students work on surveying tasks and CAD modelling, acquiring knowledge and skills through ‘mainly designing’ activities.

The project was conducted in association with Underground Professional Services (UnPS) a specialist tunnelling and underground space consultancy.

Key Learning:

  • The need for structures to fulfil human needs.
  • How to develop floorplans using grids, with pupils thinking schematically about the basic use and need required of spaces.
  • Use CAD to develop solutions to architectural problems
  • Use CAD modelling to communicate final design presentation drawings.
  • UnPS staff will talk about the role of their business and actively involve students in a surveying activity with a theodolite.
  • Students see the benefits of working. Students are presented with information to guide pupils through options, examination courses, and into further education or careers in the industry. Students can explore the wide range of future opportunities Design and Technology can offer.

Skills:

  • Understand and use simple surveying skills.
  • Plan spaces 1:1 using simple strategies.
  • Develop confidence in Google SketchUp software to explore and display an architectural design solution.
  • Pupils become more spatially aware.
