Skills Gap Resources – 3D Modelling Using SolidWorks
Ages: 11-14 years
First published 2015
The project was developed by Thomas Dudley and Highfields School as part of the Skills Gap Programme. It involves developing solutions to a given ‘industrial-referenced’ brief, set by the business, focussing on 3D modelling and prototyping, and was delivered to Y8 students.
The project is designed to encourage students to work in teams to find their own solution to the business challenge. The process includes developing a 3D model and rapid prototyped product as a possible solution, culminating in a final presentation to an expert panel in which students outline their design thinking throughout the prototype development stage.
Key Skills: 3D modelling software (SolidWorks); rapid prototyping (3D printer); time-management.
These resources were developed in 2015 as part of the Skills Gap programme, linking schools with industry, to enhance Design and Technology teachers’ technical skills and knowledge to deliver an exciting, relevant and up-to-date curriculum.
