What’s the point of school?

What’s the point of school?, The title used for this D&T Practice Magazine editorial is also the title of an excellent book by Guy Claxton. This is a book that I read and re-read as a headteacher as I regularly sought to step off the education treadmill and carry out a sense check of where the school was, and how this stood up against the education that I believe in and wanted for the students. We have all been guilty at some time or other of running without paying due attention to the direction of travel. The end...

Want a job? We need D&T teachers!

Want a job? We need D&T teachers!, The most important educational resource of all is a supply of dedicated, highly skilled, motivated and committed teachers. This is never more the case than when it comes to the teaching design and technology in secondary schools. Yet we are possibly approaching what could well be a national recruitment crisis. For the second year running, teacher training recruitment is showing signs of falling well below target. (Last year less than half the places for initial teacher training in D&T were filled.) Training institutions are once again predicting short falls, which in turn...

GCSE and GCE Design and Technology developments: where are we?

GCSE and GCE Design and Technology developments: where are we?, There is no doubt about it, keeping up with the changes and possible implications for the future direction of design and technology (D&T) and related qualifications is challenging. Unfortunately, we are suffering from a system that has precious few experts in positions of influence and no experts employed by Government who can take on the role of the QCDA subject officers we once depended upon. Consequently, the passage...

Reflecting on my second week at the beginning of what is set to be yet another turbulent year for education, where did it go? A week when we heard once again from the Department for Education that they would like to discuss with us what revised GCSEs for the subject might look like. That’s good. Then Sir Michael Wilshaw speaking from Nottingham at...
