Volunteers needed to inspire future engineers

Hands-on STEM experiences support practical learning and career inspiration
The Greenpower Education Trust is calling for volunteers to help inspire the next generation of engineers through hands-on motorsport and engineering projects in schools across the UK.
Working alongside experienced Greenpower Volunteer Ambassadors, volunteers support pupils as they design, build and race electric kit cars as part of the charity’s popular Formula Goblin and Formula 24 programmes. The initiatives engage pupils aged 9–16 in practical science, technology and engineering activities that bring classroom learning to life.
No engineering experience is required, making the opportunity accessible for teachers, school staff, parents and industry professionals keen to support young people. Volunteers receive guidance throughout and help pupils follow instructions, identify parts and safely assemble their cars step by step.

Building confidence through practical learning
For design and technology teachers, the programme offers a valuable way to enrich curriculum learning with meaningful, real-world experiences. Pupils develop practical making skills alongside teamwork, communication and problem-solving abilities, while gaining confidence using tools and understanding engineering processes.
The experience can also help broaden pupils’ career aspirations by introducing them to future opportunities in engineering and technology industries. One of the most rewarding moments for volunteers is seeing students test drive a car they have built themselves, creating a strong sense of pride and achievement.
Greenpower also supports organisations looking to strengthen Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, with opportunities for employees to volunteer individually or as teams within local schools and youth groups.
Teachers interested in starting a team can find out more via the Greenpower start a team page. Those interested in volunteering can sign up through the Greenpower volunteering page.
