A picture book opening up design and technology from Early Years
Published 7th January 2026
Introducing design and technology in Early Years can be both exciting and challenging. My Mummy is an Engineer by Kerrine Bryan and Jason Bryan is proving to be a valuable classroom resource, supporting teachers to embed meaningful D&T learning from the very start of school.
Reviewed by Kimberley Mount, a reception teacher and design and technology lead at Beaumont Primary Academy, the book was chosen for its clear relevance to Early Years provision and its potential to strengthen design and technology across the curriculum. While ideally suited to Early Years and KS1, the concepts explored can also support learning in KS2.
Written in rhyme, the story makes strong links to literacy and phonics, while naturally connecting to maths and science. This creates rich opportunities for cross-curricular learning, with design and technology providing a practical and engaging focus.
From story time to purposeful D&T learning
The book introduces the process of D&T in a way that is accessible for younger children. Through the narrative, pupils begin to understand designing, making and problem solving, helping them grasp the different strands of the subject without needing formal terminology.
A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork and collaboration, encouraging children to work together to solve problems. Following shared reading, Kimberley observed children confidently taking on the role of engineers within continuous provision. Activities ranged from junk-modelling rockets and vehicles to exploring engineering challenges through maths and group problem solving.
At the heart of the story is an inspiring and inclusive role model. The main character is a hardworking mother who is an engineer, offering a positive message about following ideas and ambitions regardless of background or circumstance. This representation helps widen children’s perceptions of engineering and design and technology from an early age.
The impact has been lasting. Children have gone on to design and create aeroplanes, boats and hot air balloons, as well as building structures in the construction area using a range of resources. The book has also encouraged the use of more open-ended materials to support child-led D&T learning.
Described as a class favourite, My Mummy is an Engineer continues to inspire design and technology learning beyond Early Years.
