The Festival of Design & Engineering at Bournemouth University

The Festival of Design & Engineering (FoDE) at Bournemouth University offers an opportunity for schools to connect classroom learning with real-world application. Showcasing final-year student work across design and engineering, FoDE provides an engaging environment where visitors can see how ideas develop from concept through to fully realised outcomes. Students will present the processes behind their successful projects, showing an understanding of research, iteration, problem-solving and technical execution. These are all core elements of design and engineering education.

One of the key benefits of attending FoDE is the opportunity for visitors to experience authentic, project-based learning in action. Seeing university-level work helps to raise aspirations and gives students a clearer sense of progression beyond school or college. It also reinforces the importance of creativity, resilience and critical thinking, skills that are increasingly embedded within the curriculum.

Exploring Future Pathways and Careers

This event also provides  insight into the breadth of pathways available within design and engineering. Students can engage directly with university students, ask questions about their projects, and gain a better understanding of the skills and interests required in these fields. This can be particularly beneficial for careers education, helping pupils make informed decisions about future study and employment. In addition, the event introduces students to the wider context of design and engineering within industry. 

Reflections from Festival of Design and Engineering 2026

On 18th June, Ryan Ball had the opportunity to visit Bournemouth University and experience the festival in person during Industry Day.

Alongside the exhibition of final year work across Product Design, Design Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, several projects stood out and received industry recognition on the day. Highlights included Laurel Cooling by Olivia Cole, Solace by Olivia Farr, QONNA by Benjamin Jones and Halo by Josh Lowe.

Seeing the projects first-hand offered valuable insight into the creativity, technical skill and iterative design processes behind the final outcomes. The event provided a great opportunity to see how students are applying research, problem solving and practical skills to address real-world challenges.

Many of the students exhibiting at FoDE will now continue their journey at New Designers next month, showcasing their work to a wider audience with the ambition of building connections, raising awareness of their projects and taking the next steps in their careers.
