Design icons: the Anglepoise lamp

Few everyday products demonstrate the relationship between engineering and design as clearly as the Anglepoise lamp. Developed in the 1930s, its ingenious spring mechanism transformed a simple task lamp into an enduring British design icon.

From engineering problem to design solution

British automotive engineer George Carwardine developed a new spring mechanism in 1932 while exploring vehicle suspension. He soon recognised that the mechanism could be used to create a lamp that was easy to reposition yet would remain securely in place.

Carwardine worked with spring manufacturer Herbert Terry & Sons, which began producing the four-spring Model 1208 in 1933. Two years later, the three-spring Model 1227 was introduced for domestic use, becoming the archetypal Anglepoise design.

A valuable classroom case study

For design and technology teachers, the Anglepoise offers an accessible way to explore mechanisms, tension, balance, materials and ergonomics. Pupils can investigate how the springs and articulated arms work together, consider how the design responds to user needs and explore why its distinctive form has remained recognisable for generations.

Its development also demonstrates an important aspect of the design process: solutions can emerge from unexpected places. A mechanism developed for vehicle suspension became the foundation for a product that has remained useful for more than 90 years.

The Anglepoise provides a compelling example of how engineering principles, thoughtful design and an understanding of the user can come together to create a product that stands the test of time.
