GEMS Dubai American Academy ‘Inspired by Industry’

Published 23rd April 2026

A recent 3D modelling project at GEMS Dubai American Academy is offering fresh inspiration for teachers looking to embed meaningful, real-world design and technology experiences into their curriculum. Drawing on the Design & Technology Association’s ‘Inspired by Industry’ resource with Pentagram, students were challenged to rethink the traditional trophy through a user-centred, sustainable lens.

Designing with purpose and empathy

Rather than starting with form, the project placed empathy at its core. Students explored what a trophy represents, who it serves, and how it communicates achievement. By engaging with themes such as identity, perseverance and community, they developed design briefs grounded in real user needs.

This approach encouraged deeper thinking and helped students connect their work to a genuine context, designing a sustainable trophy for a Middle School Sports Awards event. For teachers, this highlights a powerful classroom strategy, shifting from abstract tasks to purposeful outcomes that resonate with students and raise engagement.

From concept to real-world impact

Using sketching, CAD and rapid prototyping, students iterated their ideas into refined designs. Access to a range of 3D printing technologies enabled exploration of materials, processes and efficiency, while peer feedback and testing supported critical evaluation at every stage.

The project culminated in a winning design being batch produced and presented at a live awards ceremony, giving students the rare opportunity to see their work realised beyond the classroom.

For teachers, this project offers clear curriculum links across KS3 and KS4, from iterative design and CAD/CAM to sustainability and evaluation. Crucially, it demonstrates how contextualised, student-centred briefs can transform outcomes, building not only technical skills but also a sense of purpose.

Inspired by Industry

‘Inspired by Industry’ is a free resource available to everyone, designed to support teachers in bringing authentic design contexts into the classroom. Members of the Design & Technology Association also gain access to a suite of Focus Tasks (FTs) and Investigative & Evaluative Activities (IEAs), providing additional structured support to deepen student understanding and progression.
