Teacher Toolkit Tuesday - Widgit symbols to support inclusive D&T teaching
Published 13th August 2025
Widgit, a leader in symbol-based communication tools, along with the D&T Association, have developed a comprehensive set of downloadable symbol resources designed to support students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). These visual tools help make learning in design and technology more accessible and meaningful, not only for pupils with SEND, but also for those with English as an Additional Language (EAL) or other learning barriers.
Visual support that unlocks learning
Symbols offer an effective way to reinforce understanding, particularly when used alongside written and spoken instruction. These resources help:
- Clarify key terms and routines
- Reinforce step-by-step instructions
- Support EAL pupils
- Encourage independent learning
- Enable pupils to record and share design ideas
- Build social narratives in the workshop
Teachers can use these symbols to label equipment, provide process guides, and simplify design tasks, all with the goal of making D&T more accessible to every learner.

Explore a growing bank of Widgit SEN Communication Symbols for D&T:

- Schools with Widgit InPrint 3 can access the full collection of 20,000+ symbols in wordlist format. (Note: Widgit InPrint 3 software required)
Why inclusive D&T matters
According to Ofsted, pupils with SEND often make better progress in design and technology than in other subjects. The subject allows pupils to:
- See tangible results and celebrate success
- Build responsibility and self-esteem
- Improve patience, persistence and focus
- Apply numeracy, literacy and communication in a practical context
