Essential H&S for D&T Workshop Technicians (S12HS) – Initial Training The Essential Health & Safety for D&T Workshop Technicians (S12HS) course provides workshop technicians with the essential knowledge and understanding required to support the safe operation of Design & Technology workshops in schools and colleges. Designed specifically for technicians working within D&T environments, the course explores the practical application of health and safety legislation, guidance and good practice within the workshop. It helps technicians understand their responsibilities, recognise hazards and contribute confidently to maintaining a safe working environment for both staff and students. Training includes key areas such as risk assessment, safe systems of work, workshop organisation, machinery and equipment safety, PPE, hazardous substances, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), maintenance and inspection, emergency procedures and good workshop practice. The course also considers the important role of the D&T technician in supporting teaching staff, preparing equipment and materials, identifying defects or unsafe conditions and ensuring that appropriate control measures remain effective. Who is this course for? This course is suitable for new or existing D&T workshop technicians who require initial health and safety training relevant to their role within a school, college or educational workshop. It provides an excellent foundation for technicians who may subsequently undertake additional training and competency assessment on specific workshop machinery and processes.
