Design and Technology education in the UK stands at a pivotal juncture. With a significant decline in student participation and a shortage of qualified teachers, the subject faces challenges that threaten its presence in the national curriculum. However, amidst these challenges lies an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine and revitalise D&T for future generations.
Securing the Future of D&T Education
Over the past decade, D&T has experienced a 68% drop in GCSE entries, and the number of trained secondary teachers has fallen from over 15,000 in 2009 to approximately 6,300. This decline is alarming, especially considering the UK's position as a global leader in design and engineering. The Design & Technology Association, in collaboration with industry and education partners, is driving forward curriculum reform to secure the future of D&T.
