Free, in-person certified CPD for secondary and FE teachers, exploring practical approaches to teaching design through stage design.

About this CPD

This free, in-person certified CPD is part of the Royal Ballet & Opera’s award-winning Design programme, a curriculum-led teacher development programme.

The session is designed for secondary and FE teachers looking to develop their students’ iterative design practice and explore approaches that can be applied across Design & Technology and Creative Arts courses.

Led by designers from the Royal Ballet & Opera, the session will introduce practical techniques for teaching stage design, helping students to develop skills in research, creative problem-solving, sketching, model-making and prototyping.

Using creative world-building as a context, the session will explore how professional design processes can be brought into the classroom to support creative thinking, iteration and the development of ideas.

During the session, you will:

  • Explore how ideation techniques can be used to rapidly generate ideas, make connections and respond to a creative brief.
  • Try practical techniques for modelling rigid and flexible structures when developing prototypes.
  • Explore free classroom resources that support students through the design process, from the initial creative brief through to final design, including the Royal Ballet & Opera’s KS5 Design Challenge.
  • Consider how these approaches can be applied across a range of Design & Technology and Creative Arts courses.

Who is this CPD for?
