Bringing smart manufacturing into the classroom
Design and technology teachers play a vital role in helping students see how ideas move from concept to real-world production. With a growing skills gap in engineering and manufacturing, Smart Manufacturing Week 2026, taking place from the 3rd – 4th June at NEC Birmingham offers a unique opportunity to explore contemporary design thinking and bring those insights into the classroom.
Real-world learning
The Design & Engineering Expo showcases designers, engineers and manufacturers using materials, components and systems that link directly to school topics. From polymers and smart materials to additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping, teachers can see processes that mirror the ‘design, make, evaluate’ cycle, helping students understand production in context.

Design thinking and emerging technologies
The Product Innovation & Design theatre demonstrates how industry develops, tests and refines ideas, highlighting iteration, evaluation and feedback, key lessons for GCSE NEA projects. Emerging technologies, including additive manufacturing, automation and CAD/CAM, show students how digital tools support flexible, sustainable production.
Engaging students
On the 4th June, the event welcomes secondary students and apprentices, offering workshops, panels and employer engagement to explore careers in design and engineering.
By bringing industry into the classroom, Smart Manufacturing Week equips teachers with case studies, inspiration and practical examples to connect design and technology learning with real-world innovation.
