Curriculum and Lesson Planning KS1 Primary Textiles

KS1 project where children design and make a textile bag for a specific user and purpose, with PowerPoints, prompts, design sheets, evaluations and inspiration activities.

Age 5-7 years
First published 2012

In this project children design and make a bag of their own creation for a specific user and purpose. The resources are designed to unlock children’s innovative thinking. They provide a context that leads children to a wide range of different design responses increasing their ownership of the design process.

Children use their knowledge of materials and their properties (Science objectives) and investigate textiles (Art objectives) to learn how textile products can be designed and made using a range of simple joining techniques. This project could be adapted and run within any learning journey, e.g. Fairy tales, the Olympics, Toys, Gardening etc.

The comprehensive resources include three PowerPoint presentations on the design process, product analysis and inspiration from nature. These take you through the process and include examples of children’s work planning notes and inspirational images to help children with their designing. There are also prompt cards for user and purpose, research and design sheets, an evaluation sheet, vocabulary, a helpsheet and unit of work.
