The Portable Power Tools (S9HS) course provides teachers, technicians and other education staff with the knowledge, practical skills and understanding required for the safe use of a range of portable power tools within Design & Technology workshops.
The course combines the relevant Design & Technology Association (D&TA) standards with practical, hands-on training and assessment. Participants develop safe working techniques while considering the particular risks and responsibilities associated with using portable power tools in an educational environment.

Practical training and assessment includes the safe use of:
Router
Jigsaw
Planer
Circular Saw
Biscuit Cutter
Angle Grinder
Training considers the correct selection, checking, setting up and operation of each tool, alongside appropriate workpiece holding, guarding, PPE and the control of dust and other hazards.

S9HS is suitable for Design & Technology teachers, workshop technicians and other education staff who use, prepare or support the use of portable power tools.
The course is particularly suitable for those requiring initial training and competency assessment in the portable power tools covered.
Course outcomes
On successful completion, participants will have demonstrated knowledge and practical competency in:
Selecting the appropriate portable power tool for a task
Carrying out appropriate pre-use checks
Safe setting up and operation
Guards and other safety features
