Free KS2–KS3 resources on building services engineering with videos, guides and challenges helping students explore roles, skills and real‑world systems.

Ages 11-14

These free resources have been developed with the support of CIBSE Patrons at the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, to help students understand roles and career paths into the industry. For many people, the services inside buildings – heat, power, ventilation, security and environmental systems – are invisible. Young people are often unaware of how exciting and rewarding building services engineering careers can be, and what an impact BSE design decisions have on our planet.

These resources include video case studies of five of civil engineers with different roles, a teacher guide and PowerPoint based challenges for late Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils in which they develop solutions in related areas.

In these the five civil engineers are presented as cartoon characters, each offering a challenge that teachers can adapt from units they are currently planning to teach and are linked in to the D&T KS2 and KS3 curriculum. The challenges can be adapted and developed into research, design-only, or design and make projects to suit your school and pupils.
