EYFS project exploring hinges and catches through investigating boxes and moving joins, with PowerPoints, helpsheet, design sheet and full unit of work.

Hinges and Catches

EYFS
Ages 3-5 years

In this project children are encouraged to explore how materials are joined together so they can still move. Activities include children going on a hinge hunt and comparing different types of hinges. What do they do? How do they work? They investigate different types of hinges and catches on boxes in order to design and make a special box for a particular user/purpose.

The resource includes two PowerPoint presentations, one for children with prompt questions and illustrations of different types of boxes, and one with examples of how this was carried out in a school, with examples. The resource also includes a helpsheet, a design sheet, a unit of work and narrative showing how the project unfolds.

The resource pre-dates the 2012 changes to the EYFS Statutory Framework and does not contain details of the updated early learning goals or assessment.
