Curriculum and Lesson Planning KS2 Primary CAD

This step-by-step tutorial introduces Sim Lab in Tinkercad, showing how physics simulation can be used to test digital models and explore how structures behave under different conditions. Using a frame tower as a practical example, it guides users through applying a load and observing the effects of gravity, compression and tension in real time.

The presentation explains how to prepare objects in 3D Design mode, switch into Sim Lab and assign different materials to individual components. Pupils can run and reset simulations, change the weight and material of a load, throw objects at a structure and compare how combinations such as concrete, steel, polystyrene and ice affect its strength and stability.

Ideal for connecting CAD with practical investigations into structures and material properties, the tutorial encourages pupils to test predictions, analyse results and refine their designs. It also provides meaningful links across STEM subjects, including design and technology, engineering, mathematics, science and physics, while making complex concepts accessible through engaging visual experimentation.
