Curriculum and Lesson Planning Design skills Design for society Communication KS3 Secondary

A resource exploring innovative design thinking, encouraging students to generate, test and refine original ideas across D&T projects.

This project is aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 students studying product design and consists of six lessons of one hour each. It focuses on critical assessment, research and using results to develop and communicate ideas. There are many approaches to innovation in product design to stimulate ideas, from models, a critical examination of existing products, real or imagined; to sessions including Hothousing, Crowd Sourcing and Open Sourcing concerned with generating and gathering ideas and opening up new avenues.

During the project students will:

  • Explore and critically assess innovative designs
  • Understand and use research methods to develop design ideas
  • Communicate ideas effectively
  • Present and evaluate their work

The resources include a scheme of work, PowerPoint presentations and a full plan for each lesson, video clips looking at the nature of design innovation; worksheets and evaluation sheets for students and their peers. The scheme of work includes objectives and summaries of the activities, including homework.
